What are Public Lands? Public Lands are areas of land and water that are "owned" by the citizens of the United States and managed by government agencies. There are many different kinds of public lands, and each kind of public land has different rules, usages, and reasons for being protected for use. What does that mean for motorcycle camping?
Rules and Guidelines For Dispersed Motorcycle Camping on US Public Lands
Dispersed camping is the term used for camping anywhere on National Forest, National Grasslands or Bureau of Land Management land -unless otherwise noted- outside of a designated campground.
Dispersed camping means there is no infrastructure you would normally find in a campground. There are no toilets, no picnic tables, no trash cans, no treated water, and no fire grates. So it is imperative to follow leave no trace principles. Do not leave Trash, pack out all of your food waste, pack out your toilet paper (and in some desert environments -pack out your poop.)

Throughout my trip on the Mid Atlantic BDR I used the ZOLEO at night when I had wrapped up riding for the day. I had no issues connecting to the Iridium satellite network and I was able to send my family and friends texts and my position regardless of terrain or location. The battery life of the communicator was amazing and I never had to charge it on my ten-day trip. Everyone’s idea of motorcycle camping is a little different. Some may need to find campgrounds with paved routes, some may need showers, running water, or electrical hookups. Others may need, well, less than that.
Some State Park Campgrounds and many Private Campgrounds like RV Parks and KOAs will offer many more amenities than campgrounds that can be found on public lands like Forest Service and BLM which tend to be more on the primitive side with just a fire pit, picnic table and a pit toilet available for amenities.
